Overview
The HSBC Premier World Mastercard® is a category rewards card from HSBC, running on the Mastercard network. The HSBC Premier World Mastercard® earns up to 3x on groceries, gas, and travel, so it pays you the most exactly where you already spend. It carries a $95 annual fee, so the real question is whether its rewards, credits, and perks clear that bar for the way you spend. New cardholders can earn 50,000 bonus points after $4,000 in the first 3 months.
It lands in the mid tier: a modest annual fee in exchange for stronger earn rates and a meaningful welcome offer. The right call depends on whether your spending and the perks clear that fee each year.
Think twice if: your spending does not line up with its bonus categories, or if you would rather not think about where you swipe at all.
Our 8.4 out of 10 rating
Each score weighs the rewards rate, value after the annual fee, welcome offer, points flexibility, and perks, with every point valued at a flat 1 cent. This is our editorial assessment to help you compare cards, not a guarantee of approval or of the value you will get.
Rewards: how it earns
Where the HSBC Premier World Mastercard® earns its rewards is its bonus categories: 3x on groceries (about $180 a year on the $6,000 a typical household spends there), 3x on gas (about $65 a year on the $2,160 a typical household spends there), and 2x on travel (about $36 a year on the $1,800 a typical household spends there). Across a full year of average household spending, the card returns roughly $473 in rewards before any welcome bonus, so the more your spending overlaps those categories, the better it does.
| Category | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Groceries | 3x | Bonus category |
| Gas | 3x | Bonus category |
| Travel | 2x | Bonus category |
| Dining and restaurants | 1x | Base rate |
| Streaming | 1x | Base rate |
| Everything else | 1x | Everything else |
The fine print on rates: Requires an existing HSBC Premier checking account to apply. Points transfer to airline and hotel partners through the Rewards for Miles program.

Pros and cons
- 3x on groceries
- 3x on gas
- 2x on travel
- Welcome offer worth about $500
- Annual statement credits offset the cost
- $95 annual fee to earn back every year
The welcome bonus
The current welcome offer is 50,000 bonus points, earned after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months. Valued honestly at a flat 1 cent per point, that is worth about $500. The spending requirement works out to roughly $1,333 per month, so make sure it fits your normal budget rather than pushing you to overspend. Stacking the welcome offer on top of a typical year of rewards and accounting for the $95 annual fee, the first year is worth roughly $878.
Is it worth the annual fee?
For most people this is a year-one card, but it has two things that can tip it into keeper territory. The up to $60 in annual streaming credit knocks the effective fee down to about $35, and the points transfer 1 to 1 to eleven airlines and two hotels, which is unusually flexible for a $95 card. If you are already an HSBC Premier client and you will use those transfer partners, holding it makes sense. If you are not, take the bonus, enjoy the flexible points while you have them, and downgrade before the second fee, because 3x on gas and groceries alone is not quite enough to justify $95 a year.
First-year value vs ongoing value
| Welcome bonus | 50,000 bonus points |
| To earn it | $4,000 in the first 3 months |
| Est. first-year value* | $1,083 |
| Est. ongoing value / yr* | $583 |
The welcome bonus makes year one the high point: roughly $1,083 in value once you count the bonus, this card’s rewards, and its credits, minus the $95 fee. After that, the honest figure is about $583 a year, so judge whether it earns its keep on the ongoing number, not the first-year headline.
*First-year value counts the welcome bonus, estimated rewards, and annual credits, minus the annual fee; ongoing value is a typical year after. Every point at a flat 1 cent, on average spending.
