The Best Business Credit Card for Average Business Spending (2026)

Business cards advertise eye-catching rates, but the only number that matters is what they pay you back on the way you actually spend. We built a representative small-business owner's budget, ran all 19 general-purpose business cards through it, and ranked them by the rewards left over after the annual fee, valuing every point at a flat 1 cent. Airline and hotel co-branded business cards are ranked in their own table, since their rewards are locked to one program.

The average business owner's spending

There is no single "typical" business, so we used a balanced profile weighted toward the categories most business cards reward: advertising, shipping, office supplies, telecom, and travel, plus general spending. It totals $45,000 a year.

Every general business card, ranked by net rewards

These are the flexible cash and transferable-points business cards, the ones that reward general business spending rather than one airline or hotel. Net rewards is what the card earns on the profile above minus its annual fee, the number that tells you which card actually puts the most money back in the business. The far-right column adds the welcome bonus for a first-year total. Percentages are the effective cash-back rate at a flat 1 cent per point. Airline and hotel co-brands are ranked separately below.

Airline and hotel business cards, ranked separately

Co-branded business cards earn miles or points locked to a single airline or hotel, so they do not belong in the same ranking as flexible cards. At a flat 1 cent they look weak, but their real value is in perks the rate does not capture: free checked bags, lounge access, elite status, and a second welcome bonus for a brand you are loyal to. If you fly or stay with one brand for business, weigh those perks on top of the raw rate. See are airline and hotel business cards worth it.

What the numbers say

The Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash℠ tops the ongoing ranking, netting $900 a year (2.0% effective) on this profile after its $0 fee. Once you add the welcome bonus, the biggest first-year haul belongs to the Capital One Spark Cash Plus at about $2,750, though that is a one-time boost, not a recurring rate.

The lesson for business owners is the same as for consumers: match the card to where your money goes. A card that rewards advertising and shipping is worthless if you mostly buy inventory and gas. Run your real categories through the calculator, or see our curated picks in the best small business credit cards.

Methodology. Based on the 19 general-purpose plus 15 airline and hotel co-branded active (non-legacy) business cards in the Cardocrat database, verified against issuer sources as of June 2026. Each card is scored on a fixed small-business spending profile totaling $45,000 per year. Rewards is the annual earn on that profile, net is rewards minus the annual fee, and first year adds the welcome bonus at a flat 1 cent per point. Airline and hotel co-branded business cards are ranked in a separate table because their rewards are locked to one program and a flat 1-cent valuation understates their perk value.
